I spent the first 12 years of my professional career as an elementary educator, teaching reading to third and fourth graders. Today, I am a content strategist for Digital Wave. One of my primary projects involves writing eLearning content for active military service members.

When I first pivoted to this role, I thought to myself: How different can it really be? Writing and delivering a lesson plan for eight-year-olds can’t be that different from designing content for adults in the military.

Looking back, I have to laugh. I was quickly humbled by how much I had to learn (and still do) in the corporate world, but I was also relieved because many classroom practices carry over to eLearning.

The Big Difference: Losing the Live Feedback Loop

While people learn in much the same way whether they’re eight or 38, writing eLearning content for the web has one massive structural shift.

The single greatest shift from the classroom to the screen, in my experience, is the loss of the live feedback loop. With an in-person audience, an educator has the privilege of reading the room. They can check for understanding in real time, clear up misconceptions on the spot, and adjust their delivery based on body language and participation.

With eLearning content, that option doesn’t exist. Content creators must anticipate potential roadblocks before a user ever encounters the text. This is where user experience (UX) and digital accessibility become critical. Because there is no option to adapt or adjust a lesson on the fly, the content structure itself must do that work on its own.

However, once moving past that missing feedback loop, the core of instructional design remains the same. Here is how those seven principles bridge the gap between classroom and web instruction.

7 Shared Principles: Classroom vs. eLearning Content

1. Plain Language Wins

  • In the Classroom: When introducing complex academic concepts, teachers anchor them with plain language students already understand so they don’t get lost in heavy jargon.
  • In eLearning: Plain language means breaking down dense military or technical terms into direct, clear concepts. It isn’t about lowering the reading level; it’s about removing barriers so the learner can focus on the core lesson.

2. Logical Structure Protects Readability

  • In the Classroom: A good lesson plan has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Teachers use whiteboards, visuals, physical outlines, or presentations to show students how ideas connect sequentially.
  • In eLearning: On the web, visual layout determines how easily information is absorbed. Instead of chart paper or a markerboard, clear heading structures, bullet points, and short paragraphs allow the eye to easily scan and digest the page.

3. Accessibility is Foundational

  • In the Classroom: If a student has a visual or hearing impairment, teachers don’t build a lesson and try to “fix” it later; materials, seating, and physical space are set up so every student has equal access from minute one.
  • In eLearning: Accessibility cannot be an afterthought — it must be built into the development process from the start. Web users who rely on assistive technologies, like screen readers, depend on alternative text (alt text) to understand images and key visuals.

4. Hook Your Audience with the Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)

  • In the Classroom: Teachers start every lesson by explicitly stating the objective: “Today we are learning how to identify the main idea of a story.” Students need the goal immediately to focus their attention.
  • In eLearning: Web learners need that same framing. Providing BLUF or a summary within the first 100 – 200 characters outlines the core takeaway. Giving learners the destination upfront lets them mentally prepare for the instructional path ahead.

5. Anchor Concepts with Real-World Examples

  • In the Classroom: Abstract concepts stick better when connected to physical objects students already know — like using a slice of pizza to teach fractions.
  • In eLearning: Technical data quickly becomes boring and unmemorable. To make complex topics stick, creators must connect the material directly to real-world scenarios learners encounter every day.

6. Supplement with Targeted Resources

  • In the Classroom: For students who finish early or want to dive deeper, teachers point them toward the classroom library, curated worksheets, or educational games.
  • In eLearning: Keeping the primary digital learning path clean and uncluttered is essential, but embedded links or a supplemental section at the end of the content offer ways for learners to explore further without cluttering the page for everyone else.

7. Success Requires Collaborative Quality Control

  • In the Classroom: Teachers rely on themselves, planning sessions, professional learning communities (PLCs), peer reviews, and mentor observations to critique curriculum and catch gaps in lessons before delivery.
  • In eLearning: Writing for the web requires a multi-layered review process because digital content sits on a complex tech stack. Unlike print or live instruction, web writing must pass through design, technical, and accessibility checks to ensure it renders correctly across different screens, browsers, and devices. Quality control ensures the infrastructure, layout, and content work together seamlessly so a remote learner never stumbles.

The Learner-Centered Default

At the end of the day, moving from a physical room to a digital interface doesn’t alter the core mission. Whether you are designing digital modules for a deployment unit or teaching comprehension strategies to a nine-year-old, the rule remains identical: keep the purpose of the content and the reality of the learner at the absolute center of every single decision.
